Is full underground mining fleet electrification a feasible option to achieve the decarbonised mine of the future?

As part of its commitment to achieving net zero emissions from direct operations by 2035, IGO set out to answer that question in its Cosmos Nickel Operations Underground Electrification Study.

The goal of the study was to determine whether Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are a viable alternative to a diesel fleet in an existing underground mine.

IGO, Perenti and ABB worked in close collaboration to understand the technical feasibility, cost and operational implications for implementing a BEV fleet underground.
