At Perenti, the health, safety and wellbeing of our people and stakeholders is our highest priority. We learn from incidents – when they occur – and apply our own lessons learned, as well as those from external organisations, for the benefit and care of our people.

Surface and underground mining techniques, exploration, and blast hole drilling, as well as hiring or refurbishing mining equipment, are at the core of our business as a leading provider of mining services. Mining has always been regarded as a high-risk industry – but it need not be. As resources accessible through surface mining techniques are increasingly exhausted, we’ve seen an increase in the demand for underground mines.

This observation presents some complex engineering and safety challenges, but also some exciting opportunities to demonstrate our enhanced capabilities, honed over more than thirty years of industry experience. We consistently deliver enduring value to our people, clients, and shareholders alike.

We recognise that incidents can have life-changing consequences for individuals, families and communities, and we remain focused on embedding safety into every decision, process and action across our business.

Our approach to health and safety is systematic and proactive, supported by the governance of the Safety and Sustainability Board Committee and anchored by a robust Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management System aligned to international standards. By combining leadership accountability, critical risk management and technology-enabled solutions, we are continually strengthening our ability to identify, manage and eliminate hazards in underground environments.

Building a predictive, prevention-focused safety culture

During 2025, Perenti accelerated its transition toward a predictive safety culture that places prevention at the core. We advanced critical risk programs through updated standards, expanded verification processes, and multidisciplinary bowtie risk assessments. These reviews helped deepen our understanding of credible single and multiple fatality scenarios, ensuring the right critical controls are in place and performing effectively.

Leadership development is also a key focus. Frontline leaders participate in targeted coaching to improve in-field engagement, while new training programs enhanced supervisor capability to support both physical and psychological safety. We also launched a global roadmap aimed at fostering a workplace where everyone feels safe, valued and respected. This initiative included skills training for leaders to support psychological well-being and the introduction of employee surveys to inform continuous improvement.

Technology that protects

Technology is central to our safety strategy, helping reduce human exposure to hazards in dynamic underground settings. In 2025, Perenti expanded its Area Denial System (ADS) – which was first deployed in Australia in 2024 – to all regions globally. ADS uses proximity sensors to detect people near jumbo drill rig booms and automatically deactivates boom movement, significantly reducing crush and entanglement risks.

We also began global deployment of Enhanced Camera Systems, addressing visibility risks linked to reversing mobile equipment. By improving situational awareness for operators, these systems strengthen defenses against vehicle interaction incidents – one of the highest-risk scenarios underground.

Fatigue management and in-vehicle monitoring systems have also been rolled out across all drilling services vehicles identified as high risk, including those used for long-distance travel and night shifts. Complementing these efforts, Swick advanced deployment of an RFID proximity system, designed to control access around live drill strings and reduce interaction risk.

At BTP, we have partnered with UTS to develop safer tooling for high-pressure pulling and pushing tasks that ensure that the rated capacity of components used is matched and safe work limits are never exceeded.

Trialing safety innovations

Barminco’s operations at Sunrise Dam gold mine provided the backdrop for a 12-week trial of personal carbon monoxide monitors in partnership with AngloGold Ashanti. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that can be generated during blasting or by equipment underground, posing a high-consequence risk if undetected.

During the trial, employees tested monitors in real working conditions. The devices successfully detected hazardous levels of carbon monoxide, demonstrating their potential as a valuable final line of defence. Challenges such as device tracking, false alarms and alarm response consistency were also identified, providing critical learnings to refine future deployment. Our next steps include enhancing user training, improving device allocation processes and incorporating lessons from industry peers who have implemented similar systems.

Strengthening global consistency

Safety improvement plans were implemented at divisional and project levels, driving consistent performance uplift across our operations in Australia, Africa and beyond. These included standardisation of procedures, integration of assurance processes, and enhanced incident reporting and investigation practices. Field-based verification checks, supported by digital tools, further reinforced the effectiveness of critical controls.

By standardising our approach while empowering local leaders, we ensure that best practice is not only developed centrally but embedded consistently across our global projects. This alignment enables frontline teams to focus on execution with confidence that robust systems and resources support their safety.
